A winter staple and a family favorite, there is nothing quite like a mug of rich homemade hot cocoa (spike it, if you like it) to accompany a visit by a warm and toasty fireplace or cozy blanket-layered sofa. Leave the mix at the store. Trust me, y'all, it is so ridiculously easy to prepare. And so very worth it. Enjoy.
Combine the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and water/bourbon in a medium saucepan, and bring to a boil. Reduce to low heat and simmer for 2 minutes, stirring fairly constantly. Add milk, cream, vanilla, and cinnamon (if desired), and stir to incorporate. Divide between four mugs. Enjoy with (toasted) marshmallows, whipped cream, and a dusting of cinnamon, if desired.
